Wednesday Thoughts

Music

- I don’t know why I’m surprised Guided By Voices is going to be releasing a new album considering their catalogue, but I’m interested to hear it. They’re going back to the “classic lineup” they used on two of my favorite albums ever in Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes, but those albums were released 15 years ago at this point. Apparently they’re not content living off of playing the gigantic discography they’ve already created, one that still let them play a pretty awesome show this past summer at Sasquatch. At this point I’m just hoping that Pollard is writing because he still thinks he can make a classic album, because not every thought deserves a song.

- The coolest band of the moment is the Black Keys. I got a bit worried when I heard that the Black Keys were going to be trying to return to their earlier sound on their upcoming album El Camino. I enjoy their work before Brothers to a decent extent, but for me it was mostly a case of liking singles here and there while the albums were forgettable. People who were big Black Keys fans prior to Brothers seemed to prefer the pure rock sound understandably, but I grew to love Brothers as one of the best of 2010. Fortunately I enjoy the first released single Lonely Boy a lot, and it’s giving me promising feelings about the upcoming album.

Sports

- I’m ignoring the NBA lockout almost entirely. I enjoy watching NBA basketball, and I root for a team going through an exciting period in the Knicks, but I’ve barely even noticed the absence of basketball. I’m sure it’ll hit me a lot harder if it goes on to cancel the entire season, but I figure that I’ll be fine as long as there’s NFL games.

- Plus I get my basketball fix from college sports. I’m a Syracuse fan and this has been a great week for us. Season starting very soon, just got a commitment from DaJuan Coleman, and the football team demolished a ranked team on national television last week. Personally, I’m going to miss the Big East, but I’m glad that Syracuse accepted the invite to the ACC because if they didn’t another school in our conference would have, and we’d be in a poor situation.

- Bye week for the Jets at a  good time, rest up and prepare for Buffalo in 2 weeks. Only 2 games jump out to me as interesting battles, Pittsburgh-NE and Dallas-Philadelphia. I’m sure New England will win their game in a blow out because they seem to have Pittsburgh’s number and Pittsburgh hasn’t been very impressive this year, but you’ve still got to look forward to the matchup between 2 of the more successful franchises of the past decade. Dallas-Philadelphia interests me because I think the NFC East is the hardest division in the NFL to choose a favorite in right now, and I want to see if either team can make a statement win.

Miscellaneous

- Halloween this weekend, I’m going to Foam Fest at the Armory dressed as a Monk with the letter “E” duct taped to the front and back of my robe. That way people can be confused and ask me what I am, and I can tell them I’m a monkey and walk away before they get it.

- It’s an annoying balance to find how much work keeps you happy. I went through the effort of becoming busier on campus, and it’s put me in a better mood in general but it’s leaving me stressful and wishing I had more free time to relax. Basically it’s impossible to make me happy.

- Went to the Egg for the first time last night, really cool theatre but we left before the show was over. The Indigo Girls were the main act and were to country for my tastes, but the real thing that was bothering me was how out of place we were in the crowd. I had trouble spotting any other teenagers there, just 45 year old women awkwardly patting their laps out of beat. Still a fine experience though, and you can’t complain about free tickets

Song of the Week

This segment’s pretty self explanatory, I’m going to choose any song I love that’s been stuck in my head for the past week. No genre restrictions, no time restrictions, only thing I can promise is the same song won’t get done twice.

This week’s choice- Modest Mouse- Think Long

Sad Sappy Sucker is full of these quick concept songs, packing 24 songs into 34 minutes. The reason that this one grabs my attention so much is because the song is fully developed even with it’s 1 minute time span, and they just leave it as the simple unending debate that it is. The two lines in the song both contain a lot of truth, but they exist in contrasting styles of thought.
“Sit and think for a while and you’ll realize that you’ll still die

If You’re not thinking at all I’m not sure why you’re alive”

Finally Friday

It’s finally Friday and time for my first post on the blog! Because an Arcade Fire caused the Funeral of two men from The Suburbs, where all attendants would agree that Neon Bible wasn’t anything special

Don’t hate on the comic, that’s the first one I’ve ever did and it was surprisingly annoying. I’m going to do my best to make this a weekly segment with a comic, the albums I reviewed for WCDB that week, and one live performance that is awesome but unrelated to the rest of the post.

Album Reviews

Quick note on my rating scale cause it’s odd.

  • a 6.4 or below is 1 star
  • 6.5-7.4 is 2 stars
  • 7.5-8.4 is 3 stars
  • 8.5-9.4 is 4 stars
  • 9.5+ is 5 stars

So the majority of albums rated wind up in the 7.5-8.4 range

Village of Spaces- Alchemy and Trust 6.3/10

Album is 6 tracks long, but that’s sufficiently enough to both bore me and give me a headache. It’s a frustrating listen where the vocals aren’t that imaginative or emotional and they don’t mix very well at all with the instruments. On top of all that, you realize there’s no escape from this thoroughly unpleasant part of the song because they decide to repeat it 10 times in a row. Didn’t enjoy this one at all.

Grey Reverend- Of the Days 8.6/10

This album was awesome, really peaceful, basic indie folk music. It’s the solo project of a man called L.D. Brown based out of New York, and the tracks are just his voice and his own acoustic guitar accompaniment. The vocals have this really soulful quality to it and the lyrics are respectably good,  this one should definitely receive some airplay by  anyone playing Indie Folk, especially the two tracks below.

Unrelated Live Song of the Week

Check out this version of the closing track off Alligator by The National, called Mr. November(A classic song in itself). The crowd sucks in the beginning, but the live version becomes something special when Berninger starts venturing into the crowd *Warning: decent amount of profanity*
